Chinitna Bay Bear Tours

Chinitna Bay, located within Lake Clark National Park, Alaska, is an outstanding destination for viewing coastal brown bears in their natural environment. From a single viewpoint—especially along the tidal flats where rivers merge into Cook Inlet—visitors can sometimes spot as many as twenty bears. In these areas, the bears gather to feed on nutrient-rich sedge grasses, clams, and, in late summer, salmon runs. Sows often bring their cubs to these open spaces as a strategy to keep a watchful eye on predatory boars that might target their young.

We offer access to Chinitna Bay by small aircraft or boat. Flights depart from North Kenai, while boat trips set off from Ninilchik, Anchor Point, or Homer. Whether you choose the air or water route, the journey treats you to breathtaking views of Alaska’s rugged landscapes and the active volcanoes along the Alaska Range on the west side of Cook Inlet.

Our guided tours enhance your experience by providing expert insights into bear behavior and ensuring safe viewing practices. While boat access allows our captain to navigate toward the day’s densest concentrations of bears, the sometimes bumpy ride might not suit everyone. The airplane option is quicker and ideal for those who prefer a shorter adventure—typically a 3-4 hour tour that includes a 1.5-hour flightseeing leg and a one-hour beach stop at Chinitna Bay for bear observation.

No matter which method you choose, we prioritize respect for the natural environment by strictly adhering to park guidelines. This commitment helps preserve Chinitna Bay as a premier destination for wildlife enthusiasts and ensures the continued well-being of its bear population.
